Fresh Talk: Poland Takes Haiti to Venice

November 12th, 2015 · Comments

Artist Joanna Malinowska talks about Halka/Haiti, the panoramic film project she and her partner CT Jasper produced for the Polish Pavilion at the 56th Venice Art Bienniale. Inspired by a little known chapter in Polish history and Werner Herzog's film Fitzcarraldo, they brought the Polish national opera company to the mountain village of Cazale, in Haiti. With Polish performers, and local musicians and dancers, they presented Poland's national opera Halka to the town's Polish descendants. The film of the performance on view in the biennial effectively brings Haiti to Venice.

Fresh Talk: Jérôme Sans and Liu Xiaodong

October 15th, 2015 · Comments

French curator Jérôme Sans and Chinese artist Liu Xiaodong talk about Xiaodong's exhibition Painting as Shooting at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, Italy. On view for three months during the 56th Venice Art Biennale, the show reveals how Xiaodong approaches his work with the eyes and the storyboard practice of a filmmaker. His daily diary entries, the photos he takes, and the people he meets come to life in his paintings—his subjects play lead roles in paintings that depict contemporary life in unsettled environments the world over.

Fresh Talk: Camille Norment

July 9th, 2015 · Comments

American-born artist Camille Norment lives and works in Norway. We recorded the episode inside the Nordic Pavilion at the 56th Venice Art Biennale. Norment's project animates a space designed to converse with the surrounding topography, weather, and natural light. Titled Rapture, her elegant, immersive sonic environment evokes both harmony and dissonance.
